Pour It Now, a skateboard advocacy group is working with the City of Charleston to find a place to build a world class skate park that will give the 5,000 skateboarders in the Lowcountry a safe place to enjoy their sport.
“We want them to understand these kids are brilliant, theyre very creative, intelligent and very skilled, they just don’t have a place to exercise that,” Shannon Smith said.
Construction of Facility at Owens Field Could Start This Summer

Ever since a skate park at Owens Field was demolished in 2007, local skateboarders have had to practice their craft on Columbia’s sidewalks and streets instead of one central — and legal — location.
But before the end of the year, skaters in the metro area might finally be able to return to their old skating grounds, which are slated to become home to the only custom-designed concrete skate park in South Carolina.

The Blythewood skatepark is a feature planned to go in as a part of the new park to be built outside the Blythewood town hall. Other features include an amphitheater, ballfields, a scale model of the original Blythewood railroad depot, and more.

McDuffie said the grant will help the city build the park more quickly.
Officials will begin taking bids by the end of this month and hope to build the park for about $500,000.
Depending on how many bids the city receives, construction could begin by late March or early April. McDuffie said the park should be completed by July or August.

Artist and Skateboarder, Kevin Earl Taylor, is compiling video, photos and interviews in an effort to create a more complete documentary about this beloved skate spot from downtown Charleston. For those that had the opportunity to skate it and live it, check out the video in progress and reflect on days gone by.

He soon connected with others who shared the same passion — all of whom just wanted a place to enjoy their sport.
But, like skateboarders around the Columbia area, Blythewood teens were finding themselves shooed out of parking lots and private property.

Kids and adults from all over the Columbia area gathered at the Fifth Avenue Deli on Rosewood Drive today for National Go Skateboarding day.
But, it wasn’t just a chance to show off their skills, the area skaters also got an announcement that could make their dream into a reality.
