Skatepark Clears Another Barrier
By Joey Holleman - The State
The design and location of the new Owens Field Skate Park approved last week balanced the needs of skaters with the wishes of neighbors upset at the loss of trees during other park projects.
The plan by Wally Hollyday Design features a linear skate park with bulges for bowls and ledges at either end. It would be tucked between the existing baseball field parking area and the forest.
If the skate park is laid out as designed, no trees would have to be cut down, according to city parks planner Damon McDuffie...

Rosewood Crawfish Festival 2008
It’s called the claw for good reason. If you do not respect the claw you get pinched. The 12′7″ vertical skateboard ramp extending up the side of a 20′ building was the center of attention at the 2008 Rosewood Crawfish Festival. More than 100 spectators cheered as Bluetile Skateboards team riders jousted to claim the highest wall ride on the ramp built by Flatbottom Skateboards and East Lake Church.
The window ledge was a notable feature of the Claw. Set into the ramp on the left side was a 9′3″ tall window ledge about 3′ wide by 2′ tall. Nick Thompson led the charge to conquer the window with a rock to fakie, and nollie disaster. He was soon followed by Aaron Green and Wes Cobb with frontside and backside nose-picks, respectively. Will Mayfield claimed the highest ride of the day with his front wheels clearing the top of the ramp and touching brick. The sickness was nearly unbearable. But the crowd seemed most impressed with the uncanny and nearly unbelievable skateboarding abilities of five year old, Jack Winburn.
Sporting a youth small POUR IT NOW T-shirt Jack carefully climbed the ladder to the roll-in. The crowd held their breath as the tiny skateboarder surveyed the ramp. He set his board on the ramp and carefully held it in place with his foot while clutching the top of the ladder. The moment could not have been scripted better by a Hollywood writer. As he released his grip and glided down the roll in the crowd sucked in their hesitation all at once nearly creating a vortex that would have disrupted the space time continuum, no doubt, had jack not effortlessly flown up the wall and come back down with the biggest smile a child has ever had on their face. The crowd released their breath all at once in an explosion of cheers and applause. Jack had won them over from their hearts to their pocketbooks. One spectator said, as he put a bill in the donation jar, “watching that kid just inspired me to give.” That’s exactly what everyone did.
POUR IT NOW sold nearly $2000 worth of sk820, but more importantly we delighted the Rosewood Community. Columbia City Council Member, Anne Sinclair and The Parks and Recreation Commission’s Parks Planner, Damon McDuffie were on hand to show Wally Hollyday’s designs for the proposed skatepark and answer any of the community’s questions. City Council Member elect, Belinda Gergel was also spotted in the crowd enjoying the high flying, light hearted antics of the skateboarders. This event put us one step closer to getting our skatepark.

Letting Them Skate
Design Work Begins on New Owens Field Park
By Natasha Chilingerian - Columbia FreeTimes
Ever since the old skate park at Owens Field was demolished nearly a year ago, local skateboarders have been without a common meeting place to practice their tricks. The only public places available for skating now are the sidewalks and streets of Columbia.
But things are looking up for the skating community. The design process has begun for a new skate park at Owens Field, and according to City Council members, construction should be under way by the end of this year.

Columbia council prepared to move ahead with skate park
By Adam Beam - The State
Columbia city officials are willing to spend up to $35,000 to design a new skate park at Owens Field.
City Council members are likely to approve the fee at Wednesday’s meeting. The item is listed on the council’s consent agenda, which means it has no opposition.
It will be the second skate park at Owens Field. The city closed the first one in May to make way for a new track complex for Dreher High School.

Lana Auction - Silent, But Awesome!!!
It was elegant. It was lovely. It was Lana. The Silent Auction event opened new doors for skateboarders in Charleston, SC. More than eighty people were in attendance. Auction highlights were a 1950’s skateboard with metal roller skate wheels, an original mint condition Blaize deck, multiple Massage packages, and Microdermabrasion Procedures!!!! We raised more than $6000 for the Charleston Skatepark, more than doubling the Charleston bank account and completely destroying the record for highest grossing event. Celeste James pulled this all together and we thank her, all of our donors and bidders, and our volunteers profusely.

Today was a major stepping stone for POUR IT NOW, the City of Columbia, and the State of South Carolina. A panel formed by the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation division met to review submissions to the RFQ for Skatepark Designers for Owens Field. The RFQ was for a concrete skatepark to replace the skatepark that was demolished at Owens Field back in April 2007. The five person panel was made up of two of Parks and Recreation's finest and two POUR IT NOW members, with Travis Wheeler, President of the Rosewood Community Council, rounding out the group. There were six submissions for designers, all of whom were very capable of handling this project. The process was a detailed points system to rate each designer based on 5 levels of qualification.
After tallying up the points from all five panelists the top three designers were as follows:
POUR IT NOW was very happy with the outcome and we are even more excited at the amount of momentum we are gaining on this project. From here the process becomes standard. The city has a process which will be followed and it will be something like this:
- Parks and Rec deliberates and makes a recommendation to City Council for a designer
- City Council Votes on how to proceed and how to pay for the Designs
- Designer is hired
- Designer meets with City and POUR IT NOW
- Designer meets with Skaters of Columbia in Public Design Session 1
- Designer draws preliminary designs
- Designs are presented to the skaters in Public Design Session 2 (More suggestions and input from skaters)
- From here the designer finalizes his drawings with potential for a final design session
- Designs unveiled
- Money raised for the actual building of the park.

The first event of the new year was a successful one. The Battle for Crete put us one step closer to winning the war for a killer skatepark in Charleston. POUR IT NOW thanks all of our volunteers, everyone who came out, and we especially thank the bands (V tones, Clint 4, Charlie Mcalister, Motormouth Mabel, FLK, A Decent Animal, Hybrid Mutants, White Boy Crazy), and The Map Room (they gave us all of the door and a percentage of the bar sales for the night which is unheard of in modern history). Thanks a ton to John Pundt whose sick silk screens are about to go up on my wall and everyone else's who was lucky enough to snag a few. Thank you so much to Kevin Taylor for pulling together all these resources in such a short amount of time.

Holypalooza was an awesome event for us. There were thousands of people in attendance. We raised more than $2900.00 for the Columbia Skatepark. Everyone had a great time watching the skaters and bands. KKSM brought out the ramps and amped up the crowd. We really appreciate Stephen Seshuns giving us the chance to be part of the event and to raise more money for the skatepark!
Thanks to Daniel Rickenmann & Ben and Jerry's for donating a ton of ice cream, Salty's Skateshop for donating skateboards and completes for raffle items, Private Label USA for giving us a great deal on water, and Dominoes Pizza for selling water for us. A very special thanks to Caleb, William and Scott for being there at the event volunteering, selling raffle tickets, getting donations, and slinging water. We couldn't do it without you guys! For all your hard work you three really deserve a new skatepark. A very very special thanks to Megan Winters (Rachel's sister) for driving down from Wilmington to help us. Megan sold water all day and got a bad case of "bucket hand" the next day. Finally thanks to my dad, Neal Cockrell for coming up and getting our operation set up and dipping ice cream and selling water all day in the heat.

REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO ARREST!
Charleston, SC
Recently the Ackerman Skatepark was vandalized. Charleston Parks and Recreation recently completed $5000.00 worth of repairs and Maintenance to the Ackerman Skatepark. Not more than a few days after repairs were completed, the park was vandalized with Graffiti. The City may shut the park down because of the Graffiti. It is our responsibility as skaters and users of the park to report abusers. If we can help bring this person to justice it would be a great act of good faith to show we can take care of the parks equipment. Additionally it will send a message to vandals that they are not welcome at our skatepark. If we want to get a good concrete park we have to display the ability to care for and maintain the one we have. Let's put a stop to the lurkers and vandals and keep them out of our skatepark.
POUR IT NOW will give a free Skateboard and T-shirt to anyone who comes forward with information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism. Email any information you have to pouritnow@gmail.com

POUR IT NOW met with Charleston Parks and Recreation this afternoon. Matt Compton and Laurie Yarbrough presented maps and photos of the possible location they have found in Charleston for the skatepark. It has plenty of space for a Regional Skatepark (35,000 square feet), parking and more. It looks like it has really great potential. Charleston POUR IT NOW Director, Shannon Smith and Executive Director, Ryan Cockrell were very excited about the location. The whereabouts will remain undisclosed until it is released by the City of Charleston.

Today was the Rosewood Crawfish Festival. Some 6 city blocks were closed off and tens of thousands of people poured into the streets on Rosewood Drive to eat Crawfish and enjoy music and spectacles. Among those spectacles was the POUR IT NOW Skateboard Demo.
Bluetile skateboards, Flatbottom Skateboards, Nobyll, Continuum and Friends showed up to put on a great show for the on-lookers. Team Kevin was the MC for the day and he did a beautiful job of entertaining the spectators. With his stunning wit POUR IT NOW was able to raise $1134.15 in donations and sales.
Special thanks goes out to Kaleb Brown, Scott Mechling, Austin Mechling, the youngest Mechling (whose name we did not catch) and all their friends. These youngsters went out into the crowds and sold merchandise and solicited over $200 in donations! Unbelievable!
Overall the event was a huge success. If you didn't get a chance to buy a shirt or Koozie at the event, you can go down to Bluetile or Salty's in 5 Points and pick up one of each. Remember all POUR IT NOW sales raise money for our new skatepark.

Skate park bites the dust at Owens Field

Columbia, SC
Today was the last day to skate Owens Field. A great time was had by all as more than sixty skateboarders rode late into the night. The ramps were lit by car headlights as people sardined themselves onto the top of the half-pipe for one last session. As of April 30, 2007 the city will close the skate park. They will begin dismantling the ramps so that Richland One School District can construct their new track facility. Owens field skate park though maybe not the best skate park was loved and will be missed by all.

POUR IT NOW will continue to communicate with the City of Columbia in regards to the funding and building of a new concrete skate park. Make sure to tell all your parents and friends to stay informed and check back to pouritnow.com regularly for updates. We will be adding to the web site immensely in the coming months.

At 9:30 this morning POUR IT NOW met with Charleston Department of Recreation Director, Laurie Yarbrough and Department of Parks Director of Operations, Matt Compton. All parties were excited about the ideas that were brought to the table.
Matt Compton presented some possible sites for the skateboard park. He is looking for something in the range of 2 acres capable of holding the proposed 20,000 square foot skate park, restroom facilities and a possible pro shop/office. The possible sites are located in the "Neck" area of Downtown Charleston.
POUR IT NOW presented ideas for the skatepark and went into detail about possible features, including granite capped ledges and skateable sculptures. We presented the idea of building a skate park as beautiful as the City of Charleston.
We will be attending the Mayor's Night in next Tuesday in an attempt to present our detailed ideas to Mayor Riley.
On a different note, Shannon Smith has plans underway in Charleston for limited edition posters which would be sold as a fundraiser for the Charleston Park. All proceeds will go to the POUR IT NOW Charleston account.

Big News - POUR IT NOW launched its newest skate park effort in Charleston, SC. It's official, we are working with local skaters in the City of Charleston to get a good public skatepark built. This move came in response to the video tape of Cory Dowd being pushed off his skateboard by a police officer while doing a nose manual at Waterfront Park. It is clear that Charleston's current pre-fab park is not able to support Charleston's bustling skate community and the growing need for challenging and safe places to skateboard. Shannon Smith of Charleston has already done most of the leg work in communicating with the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Commission and together we will push to get plans underway.
Today the Columbia Council of Neighborhoods voted to support the idea of a new skatepark to be built in Columbia and will write a letter of support to the City of Columbia. This should be a big help in giving the city that extra push to come up with a budget for us. We need a monetary figure that the city will agree to spend towards the building of our new park in Columbia. We are also awaiting a decision on where to put the new park as demolition of the current park is still slated for mid-May.
POUR IT NOW skateboards go on sale this week (hopefully they will arrive friday) at Bluetile, Saltys and Continuum skate shops. Get yours today! Proceeds from the boards go directly into the POUR IT NOW bank account. Hopefully we will have more orders from other shops soon!

This morning The Owens Field Skate Park Association presented our new
petition with over 400 signatures to City Council. We asked that the city
not spend any money to move the existing park but to put the money toward
building a better concrete park designed and built by skate park
specialists. The Owens Field Skate Park Association asked the city for
$300,000 in seed money towards the park. We gave a 20 minute power point
presentation that showed why Columbia
needs a better park. City Council seemed receptive to the ideas we
presented. There was no vote but City Council asked that the city work
with The Owens Field Skate Park Association in formulating plans for the skate
park.

City Council voted today to allow Richland One to build the Track facility in the space that is now occupied by the skatepark. We presented our petition with over 250 names yet they still insist that their decision is the best scenario. City Council plans to build the new skatepark before demolition of the old skatepark. The new park will be somewhere in the same vicinity and there is currently no timeline although Richland One will be ready to begin work immediately. The City is taking responsibility for the construction of the new park which will be an exact replica of the old skatepark and use the same ramps. I proposed that the City work with the skateboarders in order to build a new better concrete facility rather than waste money on moving the current park. The city seemed receptive to the idea yet still stuck to the original plans and they assured me that the best method would be to move the current park and then move towards building an entirely new and better facility.
Here are the rough estimates that have been thrown out:
Richland One:
Moving the skateboard park: $250,000-300,000
City Council:
Moving the skateboard Park:$50,000-$100,000
(Chief Austin advised that $100,000 would be the max it would cost to move the
skatepark)
Here are some rough estimates for building a new world class concrete
skateboard park:
Current average cost per square foot: $30
(Based on conversations with Team Pain, Wally Holiday, and Grindline)
Current skatepark size: 16,000 square feet
Total Rough cost for a world class park: $480,000
There are other costs that are involved with building a new park but those and
the aforementioned costs can be reduced in various manners with cooperation
from the city:
-Using city equipment for various tasks (IE bulldozers trucks etc)
-Tax breaks on building supplies
-Using city employees for planning and rough work
We are still having meetings every Monday at 7pm at Bluetile skateboards in 5
points. Everyone is welcome and now is the time to get involved. We
need help getting new petitions together. We need help with fundraising:
If we are going to get a good park we have to help find the money to pay
for it. The city can't pay for it all. Come to the meetings and let's get this thing going.
10/13/06
We currently have around 100 names on the petition which is good but we need
more, HERE is the petition form
for you to print and take around to your friends and neighbors. We need a
bunch of names and email addresses. So get outt here and get some
signatures. Bring as many names on the petitions to the next skatepark
meeting at Bluetile Skateshop in 5 points at7pm monday 10/16/2006.
Here's the latest:
There is a public hearing on 10/18/06 at 10am at City Hall on the corner of
Main and Laurel. City Council does not know if they will vote but the
issue of the proposed track and field that may destroy Owens Skateboard Park is
on the agenda and will be addressed. This is our chance to speak out. I
will present our petition and speak on behalf of the skatepark. We need
as many people to speak as we can get. Anyone can speak for 3 minutes.
Just show up at the meeting and sign the list to speak. Its that
easy and you can say anything you want. Just get up and say you don't
want anyone to touch our skatepark.

Richland 1 school district may demolish Owens Field skatepark in order to
build a Track and Field Facility. Although Richland 1 would be required
to rebuild the skatepark, there is no telling when or how it will be rebuilt.
We could be without a skatepark for a long time. The City of
Columbia holds the power to prevent them from doing this. There will be a
vote by City Council following a public hearing in which they will decide where
to put the Track. The date for this vote has not yet been decided but it
could be as early as October 18, 2006.
The options are all at Owens Field and so far they are these:
1) The track gets built in place of the forest that sits between Owens field
skateboard park and Memorial Stadium.
2) The track gets built sideways between the skatepark and the forest and it
infringes on the Tee-Ball field which belongs to the YMCA.
3) The track gets built in place of the skateboard park and stretches all the
way to the edge of the woods.
So far there has been great opposition to option 1 by Rosewood Community
Council. There has been very little opposition to the demolition of the
skatepark. We need to let City Council know that we do not want them to
take away our skatepark. Here is what you can do to help:
1) Send an email to City Council:
Just copy and paste these addresses into the address line in your email:
mayorbob@columbiasc.net
asinclair@columbiasc.net
tidevine@columbiasc.net
djrickenmann@columbiasc.net
Then write them a short message about why you think they should not allow the
skatepark to be taken away even for a second. Tell them how much you love
to skateboard at Owens Field. Tell them that you could not stand to not
skate even if it was only for a month or a week or a day. Write whatever
you feel, but keep it clean, respectful, and truthful.
2) Some of the City Council Members do not have email addresses listed.
You can call these members:
EW Cromartie 803-254-7243
Sam Davis 803-754-0525
Kirkman Finlay 803-748-1090
3) Come to the City Council Meeting when the vote will take place. This is the
most important thing you can do. We need as many skaters to come to this
meeting. Bring your skateboard. You can sign up at the meeting to
speak and you get 3-4 minutes to say anything you want. The more people who
speak the more effective our cause will be. If you do not want to speak
then you don't have to. We will have a representative speak no matter
what and he will ask for all skaters who support what he has to say to stand up
hold up your board. The more boards in the air the better, so tell all
your friends. Check this website regularly for updates. We do not
know the date of the vote as yet. It could be as early as October 18,
2006 at 10 am or at 6 pm. We do not know yet. We will post the info
up here as soon as we know. Also spread the word and check in with the
skateshops often. They will have flyers and information.
4) Attend the next Skateboard Committee Meeting Monday October 9, 2006 at
Bluetile Skateshop in 5 points at 7:00pm sharp. We will have the most up
to date information available there and petitions available to sign.
For further information on the Track & Field plans you can go here:
