Charleston PIN News !

The Charleston chapter of Pour It Now has some news to share.

We’ve begun a collaborative design phase with Byer’s Design Group, A well established
architectural firm in Charleston, for the purpose of creating the layout and design of not
just the proposed skate park itself but also the amenities structural and technical aspects
of the area in and outside of the park proper. Meaning, drainage, parking, lighting and many
other aspects that all have to be covered to present to local review boards the city of Charleston
the SCDOT and of course the people (you) themselves.

We’re also in the negotiation stages with the city on many other aspects of the project. Including
finances, final securement of a location, timelines for fundrasing, project start to finish time
and more.

In the near future we’ll be setting our sights again on fundraising and increasing public awareness
for Pour It Now and the Charleston Skate park initiative !

Spread the word, tell folks how to find us here on the web and stay tuned for more and more
rapidly updated news here on the site.

Keep Skating,

Pour It Now !

WIS Covers Owens Field Groundbreaking

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Patience is finally paying off for some local skateboarders.

It’s been a long wait, but construction is now underway for columbia’s new skateboard park at owens field.

The organizer that helped get the tony hawk grant to build the park says he hopes this will get more youth off the streets and on a skateboard.

“We’re breaking ground today to what will be the first custom concrete skate park in South Carolina and set the bar for skate parks to come, and set this sight a landmark nationwide,” said Ryan Cockrell of Pour It Now.

The 15,000-square foot skate park facility is scheduled to open by March 2010, less than 200 days away.

City of Columbia to Break Ground on South Carolina’s First Custom Concrete Skateboard Park

Monday August 31, 2009 at 4:30pm the City of Columbia will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the much anticipated skateboard park at Owens Field (1351 Jim Hamilton Blvd). Thirty year veteran skateboard park designer, Wally Hollyday has worked with the skateboarders of SC to create a design that everyone is anxious to see realized.

Three years of work from countless volunteers and a huge commitment from the City assisted POUR IT NOW in securing the $25,000 Tony Hawk Foundation grant for this skateboard park. The project was championed by former City Council woman, Anne Sinclaire and backed by Mayor Bob and the rest of City Council. The City of Columbia fully embraced the concept of encouraging and harnessing the high level of energy skateboarders possess.

This park will provide a safe haven for Columbia’s youth, enabling them to participate in healthy physical activity in a public place away from traffic.

Blythewood Town Park Final Plan / New Blythewood Meeting Dates

The final Blythewood town park plan has been completed. In the design the skatepark takes up 20,000 square feet. It has been moved to behind the lake. This is not the design for the skatepark, but the overall plan for the town park. However this is a large step and it means the skatepark will be a reality. I will post a picture of it as soon as I can.

POUR IT NOW, Blythewood has been conducting their meetings at Blythewood High School, but during the summer months this is not a possibility. So we will now begin holding our meetings at Groucho’s in Blythewood on the second Sunday of each month at 3 pm. The next meeting will be August ninth. I hope to see a good turnout!
